Om underviseren
Arjan Tien is a distinguished Dutch conductor known for his versatility across symphonic, operatic, and wind band repertoires. Originally trained as a violinist and violist at the Utrecht Conservatory, he later refined his conducting skills under renowned mentors such as Jean Fournet, Edo de Waart, and Roberto Benzi, quickly establishing an international career.
He has worked with renowned orchestras such as PhiOn (Philharmonie Oost Nederland), The Hague Philharmonic (Residentie Orkest), the North Netherlands Orchestra (Noord Nederlands Orkest), the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, PhilZuid (Philharmonie Zuidnederland), the WDR Funkhausorchester (Cologne), the Cape Town Philharmonic, Johannesburg Philharmonic and KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestras and the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra etcetera
Tien is also highly regarded in the wind and military band world, collaborating with the Presidential Guard Band of Helsinki, the Royal Life Guards Music Band of Copenhagen, and the Schleswig-Holstein Wind Band. He was the Principal conductor of the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy from 2017-2024. His expertise in symphonic wind repertoire has earned him widespread acclaim.
In opera, he has led productions for several opera houses. His symphonic, opera and Concert Band repertoire spans from Baroque to contemporary works, reflecting his broad artistic vision.
In addition to his conducting career, Tien is a dedicated educator and is professor of conducting at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and Conservatorium Maastricht, where he trains the next generation of conductors. He also serves as the artistic supervisor of the South African Conducting Competition, supporting emerging talent on the global stage.
